FREQUENT QUESTIONS
EXPLAIN DIFFICULT ACCESS?
"Soft ground...water-covered land...low headroom... and steep terrain"
Difficult access situations solved by the Wildcat include soft ground that would not support or would be damaged by drill
trucks; water covered land such as ponds, swamps, and rivers; low-head-room places such as inside existing buildings; and
steep terrain such as on land-slides and within excavations.
WHEN DOES PRACTICALITY FAVOR WILDCAT OVER TEST BORINGS?
"The limitations of cost, timing, or space are often best satisfied by Wildcat testing."
Often, Wildcat owners verify soil bearing capacities during foundation construction by Wildcat dynamic cone testing.
Test borings could also provide the basis for such verifications, but only with great expense and disruption.
HOW DOES THE WILDCAT WORK?
"Slurry minimizes rod friction energy loss...lost points facilitate rod retrieval...you are the hammer lifter
...logs are computer generated..."
The Wildcat dynamic cone penetrometer differs from most dynamic cone penetrometers by having a polymer/water slurry injected into the 5 mm annulus between the cone's path and the rods. This prevents soils from caving onto the rods, thus
allowing the hammer's energy to travel to the cone without being reduced by friction.
The Wildcat is a lost point system where the cone or point cuts clearance for the smaller rods. The point remains lost in the ground at completion of the test, allowing easy withdrawal of the loose-fitting rods. Lost point cones are 90 degree apex, 10 sq. cm. cones.
A 35 lb (16 Kg) safety hammer is manually lifted and allowed to fall 15in. (0.38 M). Hammer blows are counted by the operator for each 0.1 M of penetration with the counting facilitated by scribes spaced at 0.1 M along the 1 M working length rods.
Wildcat blows per .1 M are reduced to Dynamic Cone Resistances by the Dutch Formula:
WHAT DOES THE WILDCAT KIT INCLUDE?
"The Wildcat kit has everything you need to test to 5 meter depths except the lost points and the Lotus 1-2-3 or Excel spreadsheet basic software."
